Zach Smith's 2016 Ohio divorce case was sealed thanks to a court ruling. Typically, ex-wife Courtney Smith's affidavits alleging violence would be public record, although a party can ask that a matter be sealed. In this case, Zach Smith's attorney presumably requested the case sealed due to the possible negative impact it could have on his employment status.
The court granted the request to seal citing an Ohio Supreme Court decision allowing the same under "unusual and exceptional circumstances.”
In a national media interview with Dan Wetzel of Yahoo Sports, Managing Partner Ronald Petroff provides his thoughts on the sealing of the case:
“It is something that isn’t granted often but isn’t completely out of the ordinary. It was good lawyering to protect the client.”
